The applications of edible insects in the food industry have been discussed for more than 10 years. Soon, hopefully in 2020, the EFSA (European Food Authority) will decide on the guidelines within which growers and processors are allowed to market their product. We have known for a long time that insects are tasty, healthy and sustainable.
It is an absolute advance if we are allowed to use insects as food for chickens, fish and other farm animals. The meat industry is under pressure, perhaps edible insects can offer many solutions here.
Pets such as reptiles, fish and rodents have been enjoying insects, especially live ones, for as long as we know. Dog food, cat food and other insect-based snacks are now also available in pet shops.
